When should I change the oil of a Liebherr excavator?
For every excavator, material handler, or earthmoving machine, it is important to change the oil on time. Below, we explain how this process works.
The function of oil
Hydraulic oil is essential for a Liebherr. The oil is pumped throughout the entire machine. This includes the slewing motor, slewing pump, main pump, travel motors, and various cylinders. All components operate with the same oil, except for the final drive, diesel engine, slewing gearbox, and transmission. These components contain their own oil.
Hydraulic oil generally lasts for 6,000 operating hours. This varies greatly depending on the machine and how it is used.
How can you tell that oil is too old?
Oil is often replaced as a precaution. However, replacing oil is costly, so it is better to check whether the oil actually needs to be replaced. Proceed as follows:
- Take a sample.
- Send it to your maintenance workshop.
- Have the iron values and viscosity measured.
- Replace the oil if the values are too high.
Iron values of your Liebherr machine
Wear is inevitable when using a machine. The fine iron particles end up in the hydraulic oil as wear occurs. The more iron present in the oil, the greater the risk of wear. Have your oil replaced in time if the iron values are too high.
Viscosity
Viscosity indicates the thickness of the oil. If the viscosity of the oil decreases, it loses its lubricating properties. That is why we measure the viscosity when we want to know something about the durability of the oil.
Replace the oil on time
If it is clear after measuring the oil that it needs to be replaced, do so as soon as possible to ensure your Liebherr remains in top condition.
