Hydrostatically driven
A travel motor is hydrostatically driven, which means that the power of the motor is controlled by oil pressure. It is therefore not a combustion engine like the main engine. The main pump in the excavator ensures the correct oil pressure, which activates the travel motor.
Traction motor and final drive
Each crawler crane has two travel motors. One for each side. Both sides also have a final drive. The travel motor transmits its power to this final drive.
The gears in the final drive ensure that the forces are amplified. This always provides enough power to move the machine. Of course, this system also reduces the forward speed. So it is not a gearbox but a 'reduction box'.
Maintenance of a Liebherr travel motor
