Liebherr long block and short block: what are the differences?
Liebherr shortblock
A short block is a cylinder block containing bearings, crankshaft, a camshaft, gears, pistons, and liners. Using a short block as a base, various engine types can be built. The difference lies in the configuration of the type of turbo, fuel pump, and similar components. Did you know that you can also build engines for Liebherr telescopic cranes using a short block?

Liebherr longblock
A longblock is the same as a shortblock, except that with a longblock, cylinder heads are also mounted on the block.

Why choose a long block or a short block?
It can be a good choice to continue using parts of your current engine and only replace the shortblock. This will save you costs. Whether you choose a longblock or shortblock depends on the condition of the cylinder heads.
Liebherr crankcase
Do you want to assemble the engine completely by yourself? Then start with a lower block. This is also called a crankcase. This is the base of the engine without moving parts.
